The SBW3501B with its lofty specification with modest price, is a very popular machine for the trade or home workshop. The integration of rigidly construct steel body, large, finely ground chuck iron table. Deep piece rip fence plus micro controllable ball bearing―blade guides produces the high level of performance demanded by both trade as-well as amateur craftsmen. The rip⁃fence runs on a calibrated aluminium⁃extrusion also is locked firmly in place with a lever, giving a solid along with accurate location. The adjustable precision miter fence is T-slotted into the table for added safety together with accuracy. The ´table tilt´ quadrants are set very widely―apart to give the maximum support to the table in-conjunction with to make the tilt action smooth.
The powerful induction motor―transmits it's power via a multi-groove horizontal belt, ensuring flat running as-well as zero slip. Safety features include a motor brake, interlocked also micro-switched doors along with an emergency finish switch. Beautifully made together with sure to please. Supplied complete with floor stand, rip fence, miter fence in-conjunction with a 6tpi band saw blade.
What led me to decide on this machine were several features. First the excellent cast-iron table, second the fence, and third the easy blade tension.
Having looked at the manual on-line (PDF document), I assumed this would be included with the machine - not so! The supplied manual is fairly basic, and does not cover enough details to make it useful! However, the PDF color manual is essential to correct assembly and operation of the saw! A quick contact to Ax minster, and a printed out version of the manual was on its way to me. Well done Ax minster!
Now, assembly is fairly straight―forward, but it is essential to have 2 people to assemble it - it is very heavy! Once assembled and adjusted, how does it work? It ripped easily through softwood, and re-sawing of some mahogany went well - if a little slowly.
The stated capacity is 200mm, but, like all band saws it will struggle a bit at that. I would suggest trying no more than 150-160mm max in hardwood. It gives a good, clean cut, and the wood is easy to control. I would recommend cutting a 'push stick' from an off cut of wood. Why doesn't Ax minster supply one with the saw? Well, this is by way of a "sacrificial" accessory! It gets cut about - your hands don't! When it gets too tatty, cut another one!
