Riving knife an even better option would be to consider a table saw with a riving knife instead of a splitter. While both do roughly the same thing, there are some key differences between the two. The disadvantage of having a splitter instead of a riving knife is that the splitter is fixed, which means it doesn't move along with the blade. Because it's fixed, a splitter needs to be removed when making cross, non-through, and dado cuts. Unfortunately, many people tend to forget to put the splitter back in place when they start making rip cuts. So if you have a table saw which uses a splitter to prevent kickback, always remember to double-check that the splitter is in place.

Fence and Miter Gouge Considerations Explained. Table saws are used primarily for ripping lumber, and in order to rip wood down to the desired width every table saw needs a fence. It's one of the most crucial components, so I thought the information below would come in handy for a lot of you.

If finer cuts are what you have set out to achieve, a crosscut blade is the better option. The resulting cut is much smoother, but because the teeth have less space for chip removal and because there are more teeth to cut through the wood, the feed rate is much slower. If you need both speed and smooth finish, there are combination blades, which attempt to do both. Also, you may come across special cut blades. These are either designed to cut through certain materials like plywood, hardwood, metal, plastic, or even brick, or they are designed to make specialized cuts for the purpose of joint making. This includes sets of dado blades.
