Another option to think about is the magnetic switch. You can read more about this on my page about safety features, but in short this will prevent the motor from dangerous automatic restarts after power interruptions. A magnetic switch is more common on cabinet saws, but you may want to consider an upgrade on your contractor as well.

I would also recommend you to look for switches that have a “sunk” or plastic cover which prevent you from turning the saw on accidentally. If you have kids running around the shop, consider a saw that comes with the ability to add a padlock. Actually, this comes in useful even if you don't have kids who are likely to gain access to your workshop.

For instance, the teeth on blades that cut through wood are made out of steel or carbon steel, which ensures their durability. Then there are masonry blades, which have diamond-tipped teeth, and you can also find blades that are made to cut through aluminum and steel. Such blades have teeth that are treated with hardened metal or tungsten carbide. Finally, there are blades designed to cut through PVC and acrylic materials, which have teeth made out of low-temperature tungsten carbide.

A splitter is basically a small vertical blade made of metal or plastic, which holds the Cerf open behind the table saw blade. It's a simple solution that works, up to a certain point.

The blade tilt hand wheel is located on the side of the saw and allows you to tilt the blade up to 45 degrees away from the fence. The hand wheel which allows you to adjust the tilt of the saw blade is usually located on the left or right side of the unit depending on which way the arbor is made to tilt. Portable table saws usually don't give you as much control as professional cabinet saws though, and they often combine elevation and tilt adjustment in one wheel.

After you have penciled in a line where you want the cross-cut to be made, align it with the blade. With the saw turned on guide the miter gouge forward until the cut is made while making sure the board is firmly in place against the straight edge of the miter gouge. One of the simplest cuts a miter gouge allows you to make is a square cross-cut. Simply set the miter gouge at 90 degrees or zero (depending on the markings), and push the board toward the blade. The result will be a board that is cut square. You can also make angled cuts by setting the miter gouge at an angle of up to 45 degrees.
