1) Log sled depend on the miter‐slot to create linear cuts. Ever since most saws have the miter slot to the right of the blade, the log is cut to the right of the blade. This puts the weight of the log out near the end of the table on a previously upper heavy band saw.
2) Most sleds require a lot of substance to construct. Either you must, firstly, construct a sled big sufficient for all logs you cut, or construct a new one, when you deal with bigger logs. For illustration, when I completed my first sled, I was working with logs little sufficient to be milled in a stock, fourteen inch band saw. The logs were less than six inches in diameter and no more than fourteen to sixteen inches lengthy.
Afterward adding a riser block, which permits me to cut logs up to 12 inches in diameters, I wanted a sled with the capacity to handle the larger logs.
3) Log sleds take up a portion of area to store.
For the previous motives, I set out to come up with a jig or sled that together permitted me to cut on the left side of the fence. Usage scraps or a minimal amount of substances, and end up with an undemanding to store sled. This is what I came up with, and it works. I used scuffle plywood, bar clamp, such as are sold by Harbor Freight and Pony, and a pair screws
Similar alternative log sleds, this one attaches to the log and steadies it.
The clamp is only wanted to steady the log, so it doesn't roll. If the log is permitted to roll, it will destroy your blade and could be hazardous if your hand were anywhere close the blade and pulled right or left into it.
When utilizing this jig, if you create your initial cut utilizing the fence and to the left of the blade, on the side where the clamp secures the log, the blade will thrust the fence down, against the table. Thus the log can't roll, if the clamp is protected sufficiently.
