The Small Ripper

Anyone who has a band saw has perhaps tried to re‐saw lumber. For example, if you want material that is 1/4" thick, it's more economical to re‐saw 3/4" inventory into two panels rather than planing the thicker panel into thinner inventory.

Although re‐sawing panels is attractive easy, it's another object to re‐saw logs. Logs are round, not always linear, and more difficult to handle than dimension‐ed inventory. But, there are a lot of 'free for the asking' and 'firewood salvaged' logs around, and some of them are very good indeed. I once had the good wealth to visit my brother‐in‐law although he was cutting up some wood that included several apple logs around 8" diameter and 4" lengthy. The woodland was wonderful: a bit browner than cherry, with swirls of pink and orange running through.

The Small Ripper is a uncomplicated, easy to usage sled that securely holds a log although you guide it through the band saw blade. The sled is made of 1/8" sheet metal, 6" wide at the base, 6" high and 14" lengthy. It's very well machined, being less than .005" off square on the sample I tested. Two strong, jagged arms steadily hold the log in site; slots in the side of the sled allow you to increase or lower the arms to accommodate variously sized logs though two knurled elastic knobs relate compression on aluminum blocks that hold the arms in site. An aluminum bar (the runner) under the sled fits accurately into the miter slot on your band saw table. You can adjust the angle of the sled by means of the two adjustment screws located at each end of the runner. This enables you to adjust for blade drift. There is also a knurled knob in the midpoint of the runner that allows you to lock the sled in site; when re‐sawing big logs you will want to remove this knob. The sled has around 2" of side drive near the saw blade.
Inventory room Supply also has a 3/8" 4tpi blade available that makes the perfect accompaniment to this jig. When properly tension‐ed on the saw, the blade cuts exceptionally well, with a very good surface finish.

This is a well‐made jig, which should last for a long‐time. And best of all, it's uncomplicated to usage. Devilishly uncomplicated.
The Small Ripper is an essential jig for anyone wanting to mill small logs (maximum of 6" diameter). It is also an excellent fence for re‐sawing dimensional inventory.
